DISNEY VILLAINOUS: PERFECTLY WRETCHED Offers Three New Characters Requiring Even More Thought
Ravensburger was incredibly kind and sent me a copy of Disney Villainous: Perfectly Wretched. This stand-alone expansion introduces Cruella De Vil, Pete, and Mother Gothel to the game and it’s a lot of fun. Each one has unique strategies and ways to play that really help them feel like more than simply just another character option. Also, as this is a stand-alone expansion, you can play this without even owning the base game. You’ll just be limited to three players.
So, let’s go back to how each of them plays. Pete is cool because his deck is 100% black and white. This is the first for the game but makes sense since he’s from a black and white film, Steamboat Willie. Pete starts the game by randomly selecting four out of five goals and places them at the different locations on his board. Once you complete these four goals, you win. Most other players simply have the one objective, but Pete technically has four and they’re always changing. Some of the goals even have requirements for the location their in while others care about certain cards or Pete’s realm as a whole.
Meanwhile, Mother Gothel is trying to gain Trust with Rapunzel and keep her locked away. Rapunzel is a Hero that is always out and is constantly moving. If Rapunzel reaches Corona (the last location on MG’s Realm) and goes to move again, MG loses a Trust. This means that you really have to manage Rapunzel’s location. On top of that, just like other Heroes, Rapunzel will block certain actions as she moves making planning your moves a little bit harder sometimes. This was probably my favorite of the new ones to play as. I simply wish they brought in dedicated Trust tokens instead of using the Power tokens as Trust as well.
Finally, we have Cruella. Cruella is trying to capture 99 puppies. To do so, she typically has to use Jasper and Horace (her only two Ally cards in the deck) and it gets very tricky. Puppy tokens come in denominations of 11 or 22 and you have to be moving your allies and items a lot in order to really make things work. The problem I had was that heroes would get put out and since you only have two allies in your deck, you can have a hard time balancing the capture of puppies and defeating heroes so you can then capture puppies. This was my least favorite for sure.
If you enjoy Disney and board games, I highly recommend picking up Perfectly Wretched. This is especially true if you play Disney Villainous. I really enjoy how I felt these characters felt like they required more careful planning than previous villains. Not to say others didn’t require strategy, I just felt these required more planning. Each of these introduces new balancing acts that I haven’t felt with previous villains and it felt like a new dimension was added. If you’ve felt like you’ve grown bored of previous characters, I think this will add some more flavor to your game.
