Disney has announced that the highly anticipated adaption of Mulan will be released on Disney+ on September 4th, but it won’t come free with the subscription. You’ll have to rent the film for $29.99. Disney has to make some kind of money off its epic adventure film, which had a $200 million budget.

As you know, the theatrical release of the film just kept getting pushed back due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Disney obviously just gave up and decided to go a completely different route.

This was a movie I was looking forward to seeing in theaters due to its grand scale and vibrant visuals, but that’s not gonna happen. They are skipping the theatrical release for the home rental that will be exclusive to Disney+. I’m a little bummed out, but at least we’ll get to watch it next month!

I imagine movie theaters won’t be happy with the news, because when they reopen, they need big movies like this to lure audiences back.

The movie was directed by Niki Caro (Whale Rider), and this is the synopsis:

When the Emperor of China issues a decree that one man per family must serve in the Imperial Army to defend the country from Northern invaders, Hua Mulan, the eldest daughter of an honored warrior, steps in to take the place of her ailing father. Masquerading as a man, Hua Jun, she is tested every step of the way and must harness her inner-strength and embrace her true potential. It is an epic journey that will transform her into an honored warrior and earn her the respect of a grateful nation…and a proud father.

Mulan stars Yifei Liu as Mulan; Jason Scott Lee as Böri Khan; Donnie Yen as Commander Tung; Yoson An as Cheng Honghui; with Gong Li as Xianniang; and Jet Li as the Emperor.

Will you be renting Mulan on Disney+ for $29.99?
