Disney's Cancelled LGBTQ Film NIMONA Would Have Starred Chloë Grace Moretz and Riz Ahmed
After Disney’s acquisition of Fox, many exciting projects came into focus, while many others unfortunately got scrapped. One of those projects that didn’t get to see the light of day was the film adaptation of Noelle Stevenson’s graphic novel Nimona. The project was set to star Chloë Grace Moretz and Riz Ahmed, who would have voiced two of the three lead characters.
Collider reports that while the project has hit this wall, it is not dead in the water. It is being shopped around in hopes of landing at a new home. The report says that fans were hopeful that the merger would see the film push forward and become “Disney's first feature-length animated movie to showcase queer lead characters, as well as a same-sex kiss.”
The report adds, “Blue Sky leadership continues to explore options to finish the film. Sources say that roughly 75 percent of the work on Nimona had been completed, but there was still another 10 months of production to go.”
It’s too bad for fans of the comic that they didn’t get to see this done in the timeline they expected, but maybe with such talent on board, the project will find a home soon. Check out the synopsis for the story below, and let us know if you’re hoping to see Nimona get made.
"Nimona is an impulsive young shapeshifter with a knack for villainy. Lord Ballister Blackheart is a villain with a vendetta. As sidekick and supervillain, Nimona and Lord Blackheart are about to wreak some serious havoc. Their mission: prove to the kingdom that Sir Ambrosius Goldenloin and his buddies at the Institution of Law Enforcement and Heroics aren't the heroes everyone thinks they are. But as small acts of mischief escalate into a vicious battle, Lord Blackheart realizes that Nimona's powers are as murky and mysterious as her past. And her unpredictable wild side might be more dangerous than he is willing to admit."
