Disney's Live-Action HERCULES Will Be an Experimental Modern Musical Inspired by the TikTok Generation
Hercules is the next movie on Disney’s list to adapt from animation to a live-action remake, following in the footsteps of many Disney movies that have come before it in recent years. The 1997 animation was a popular property for Disney, as they made the storyline that saw Hercules becoming somewhat of a local superstar, and it features one of the best soundtracks out there.
This new live-action take on the story is being directed by Guy Ritchie, who previously directed Disney’s live-action Aladdin, and it’s being produced by The Russo Brothers, who previously brought us Avengers: Endgame.
One of the most annoying aspects of these remade movies is when they are just shot-for-shot the same as their animated originals, but Joe Russo is promising that Hercules will be different. In a recent interview with Variety, Russo explained that the film will be “a little bit more experimental in tone, a little bit more experimental in execution,” adding “I think they’re excited to see what we can all bring to it in a way that isn’t just a reinterpretation of the animated film.”
Of director Ritchie, Joe said, “Guy is perfect for it because he has penchant for experimentation.” He went on to add that the live-action “Hercules” will also be a musical — and share the original’s unconventional approach, saying:
“There are questions about how you translate it as a musical. Audiences today have been trained by TikTok, right? What is their expectation of what that musical looks like and feels like? That can be a lot of fun and help us push the boundaries a little bit on how you execute a modern musical.”
It sounds like they definitely have a vision and vibe they’re going for in this next movie, and with this talent on board, I am looking forward to seeing what they come up with. Are you a fan of the original animated Hercules?
