Disney's Live-Action MULAN Is the Company's First Remake to Receive PG-13 Rating

Disney’s live-action remake of the tale of Mulan has received its official rating from the Motion Picture Associate of America. The film is going to be rated PG-13, a first for Disney remakes, stating the reason is “sequences of violence.” The trailers have looked much more “war film” than “family musical,” so that tracks.

While this may feel like a detour from the formula typically used by the family friendly company, THR points out that the last decade has proved that family films like Pirates of the Caribbean and the final two films in the Harry Potter franchise were examples of PG-13-rated movies that held their own with audiences, and did very well in box office sales.

Mulan is directed by Niki Caro (The Zookeeper’s Wife, North Country), and stars Yifei Liu as Mulan; Donnie Yen as Commander Tung; Jason Scott Lee as Böri Khan; Yoson An as Cheng Honghui; Gong Li as Xianniang and Jet Li as the Emperor.

I think the trailers for the film are beautiful, and I’m excited to get a realistic portrayal of such an incredible character. Mulan is set to hit theaters on March 27, 2020. Does the PG-13 rating hinder or encourage your excitement for the film?
