Disney's Live-Action MULAN Movie May Be Helmed by WHALE RIDER Director Niki Caro
It looks like Disney has found the director for their live-action remake of the classic animated film Mulan. The studio is currently in talks with Whale Rider director Niki Caro to take on the challenge of bringing this story to life.
Caro is a very talented director who has also helmed films such as Charlize Theron's North Country and Kevin Costner's McFarland, USA. I've enjoyed all of the films she's made, and I think she's a solid choice to direct Mulan. She most recently helmed the upcoming Jessica Chastain film The Zookeeper's Wife.
The current script for Mulan is was written by Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver, who previously worked on Jurassic World and Avatar. Disney really wants to get moving on this film project, and it's on the fast track to production.
According to Variety, Disney and Caro have the same vision for the remake, so I assume everything is going to work out between them while they are in talks.
Marvel has also been looking at Caro to possibly direct Captain Marvel. I have no idea taking on Mulan will take her out of the running, but Captain Marvel isn't supposed to be released until 2019. Maybe if they like what she does with Mulan, they'll bring her on for Captain Marvel.
