Disney's SPLASH MOUNTAIN Transformation Into TIANA'S BAYOU ADVENTURE Gets a Release Date and New Details
It was announced back in 2020 that the classic attraction Splash Mountain was going to get a rebranding and redesign in the style of the 2009 Disney animated pic, The Princess and the Frog. The ride currently resides at both Disneyland and Disney World parks, and under the new name Tiana’s Bayou Adventure, it is set to arrive in late 2024.
Splash Mountain had been based on the Uncle Remus Br’er Rabbit story in Disney’s controversial 1946 film Song of the South, which has long been discontinued and disavowed by the house of mouse. The focus of Imagineers in this updated effort is to pay homage to the history and heritage of New Orleans.
Deadline reports that “The flume ride’s new incarnation will pick up the story of the movie after the final kiss, following Princess Tiana (played by Anika Noni Rose) and Louis as they prepare for their first Mardi Gras performance. Rose is involved in the project.”
Carmen Smith, SVP, Creative Development – Product/Content & Inclusive Strategies for Disney, said of the project:
“Walt Disney Imagineers have been frequent travelers to Louisiana while conducting extensive research to ensure Tiana’s Bayou Adventure preserves the heart and soul of the city that inspired Princess Tiana’s story. From exploring the French Market and the bayou, to consulting with academics, chefs, musicians and cultural institutions, Imagineers have received inspiration from all over the region and learned from local experts along the way.”
I have no doubt that this new attraction will be a ton of fun. I loved the music in Splash Mountain, but The Princess and the Frog has beautiful music, and such a beautiful backdrop, I think it’s a great match for the attraction, and I can’t wait to check it out when it’s all done!
