Disney's Theatrical Release Plan For Marvel's BLACK WIDOW Will Be a "Last Minute" Decision

As of right now, Marvel’s Black Widow is scheduled to hit theaters on May 7th. With movie theaters now opening up in Los Angeles and New York, there’s a good chance that Disney will stick with that release date. But, Disney CEO Bob Chapek says the studio will be flexible with its release strategy for films like Black Widow, and there that the decision to release these films in theaters may be made at the last minute.

While talking with Bloomberg, Chapek announced the reopening of Disneyland on April 30th with limited capacity and enhanced health and safety restrictions in place. That conversation led to releasing films like Black Widow in theaters and he said:

“Flexibility is something that we’ve been working against, and our situations and our conditions change. I mean, just a few weeks ago theaters in New York and Los Angeles weren’t even open, and now all of a sudden they’re open. So we’re waiting to see exactly how guests respond, prospective theater-goers respond, to these re-openings. And we’re going to remain flexible. We’re going to make the call essentially, probably, at the last minute in terms of how these films come to market – whether it’s Black Widow or any other title.”

The studio is dedicated to releasing films in theaters, but with those theaters now opening, we just have to wait and see if people show up. Some of the movie theaters that opened up in Los Angeles recently had showtimes that were selling out, so that’s a good sign. People are excited about getting back to the movies!

I’d hate to see the release of Black Widow or some of the other big movies coming out get pushed back again, but we’ll just have to wait and see what happens.
