DISTRICT 9 Director Neill Blomkamp Made a Supernatural Horror Film During the Pandemic
Neill Blomkamp, the director of films such as District 9 and Elysium, went out and made a supernatural horror film during the pandemic. The untitled film was shot under the radar in British Columbia over the summer. This is the first feature film that Blomkamp has directed since Chappie in 2015. Since then he’s been developing short films for his Oats Studio and trying to get other films off the ground, like a new Aliens film and a RoboCop movie, both of which fell through for him.
Blomkamp was supposed to shoot a new action-thriller with Taylor Kitsch this year, titled The Inferno, for AGC Studios, but the pandemic pushed the production back to 2021.
It’s explained that Blomkamp and AGC “hatched a plan to make a more nimble production in the meantime in the wilds of Canada’s most westernmost province.” No plot details have been revealed, but the film is said to be “something the filmmaker had always wanted to make and is expected to be finished around spring next year.”
As for the cast, it’s largely made up of Canadian actors, and there is “a strong sci-fi and VFX component in keeping with Blomkamp’s previous three movies.”
Blomkamp not only directed the film, but he also wrote the script, and he enlisted the help of editor Julian Clarke, who previously worked on Deadpool, District 9, Elysium and Chappie, along with Director of Photography Byron Kopman (Volition).
It’ll be interesting and cool to see what Blomkamp has come up with for this supernatural horror film he’s come up with.
