Gene Wilder Biopic Set To Be Directed By Dito Montiel Following Rights Deal With Wilder Estate
One of Hollywood’s most beloved comedy legends is getting the biopic treatment. Acclaimed filmmaker Dito Montiel has officially signed on to direct an authorized film about the life of Gene Wilder, with the project securing life rights from Wilder’s estate.
Montiel is also co-writing the screenplay alongside Jeremy Roth, whose previous credits include Love, Victor and How I Met Your Father. The film is being produced by Aimee Schoof, Isen Robbins, and Megan Freels Johnston for Intrinsic Value Films, with Josh Kesselman producing through Mgmt Entertainment.
For generations of movie fans, Wilder’s work has remained timeless. Whether he was charming audiences as Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory’s eccentric candy maker, bringing chaos to Young Frankenstein, stealing scenes in Blazing Saddles, or delivering unforgettable comedy in The Producers, Wilder carved out a place in cinema history that few performers have matched.
The upcoming film aims to look beyond those iconic roles and explore the man himself. According to the project’s description, the story will follow Wilder’s journey from a shy young stage actor to one of film’s most distinctive comedic talents. It will also dive into the personal relationships, struggles, and experiences that influenced both his career and his life.
Montiel explained what drew him to the project, saying: “Gene Wilder was one of those rare people who was somehow funnier and sadder than everyone else in the room at the same time. That’s not a character. That’s a life. I couldn’t say no to that.”
Producer Aimee Schoof believes Montiel is the perfect filmmaker to tell Wilder’s story, adding: “Dito has a singular ability to hold comedy and complexity in the same frame without flinching. We are thrilled to have him directing this film.”
Montiel’s career has often focused on characters navigating complicated emotional territory, making him an interesting choice for a film about Wilder. The filmmaker first gained major attention with A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints, an adaptation of his memoir chronicling his youth during the rise of the hardcore punk scene in Astoria, Queens, in the early 1980s.
The film starred Robert Downey Jr., Chazz Palminteri, and Channing Tatum and made a major impact at Sundance, earning the festival’s Director’s Award along with a Special Jury Prize for its ensemble cast. It also went on to receive multiple Independent Spirit Award nominations.
Since then, Montiel has built a diverse filmography that includes Fighting and The Son of No One with Tatum, Empire State starring Dwayne Johnson, Liam Hemsworth, and Emma Roberts, the Robin Williams drama Boulevard, Man Down with Shia LaBeouf, the comedy-drama The Clapper starring Ed Helms and Amanda Seyfried, and most recently the crime comedy Riff Raff, which features Jennifer Coolidge, Ed Harris, Bill Murray, Gabrielle Union, and more.
A Gene Wilder biopic has the potential to be something special if it can capture the same mix of joy, vulnerability, and unpredictability that made Wilder such a unique screen presence.
With Montiel at the helm and the support of Wilder’s estate, I hope this authorized project will aim for something deeper than a standard Hollywood biography.
For movie fans who grew up watching Wilder’s unforgettable performances, this is definitely a project worth keeping an eye on.
