DOCTOR SLEEP Director Mike Flanagan Would Love To Make a Sequel Focusing on Abra Stone

Director Mike Flanagan’s sequel to Stephen King and Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining, Doctor Sleep, was an incredible film! It’s a bummer that it didn’t do better at the box office. I’m still not sure what happened and why audiences didn’t show up to watch it. It’s a great film, it was getting a lot of buzz, and there was also a hefty amount of positive word of mouth. But, things didn’t work out the way everyone hoped. At least it got made!

Had the movie been a success, we probably would have got a few other films set in that universe. We already learned that Flanagan was developing a spinoff film that would have centered on Dick Hollorann. The character was played by Scatman Crothers in The Shining and Carl Lumbly in Doctor Sleep.

Flanagan also said in a recent interview with Den of Geek that he would have loved to make another sequel that focused on one of Doctor Sleep’s key characters Abra Stone, who was wonderfully played by Kyliegh Curran. When asked about it, he said:

“Absolutely. I would love it. And when I met Stephen King, I asked him like, is there more? Do you have anything else for Abra Stone? Because my God, she’s so great. And he left it open. He said, you know, he hadn’t thought about it before, but it was people asking questions like that that made him write ‘Doctor Sleep.’ He started to really think about Dan.”

I’d love to see the story of Abra continue in some way. Maybe if Doctor Sleep explodes in the home entertainment market, these sequels might happen. Maybe they could be made for WB’s HBO Max streaming service. I would just love to see this world and the characters that inhabit it explored more. Hell, if we don’t get another movie, maybe King could just write another book! I’d be happy with that!

What did you all think about Doctor Sleep and would you be interested in a sequel that continues the story of Abra?
