DOCTOR STRANGE Director Scott Derrickson Set to Helm a Sequel to Jim Henson's LABYRINTH

Scott Derrickson, the director of Marvel’s Doctor Strange who recently dropped out the sequel for the film, has found a new fantasy film project to take on, and it’s sure to get Jim Henson fans excited! TriStar Pictures has hired the filmmaker to direct a sequel to Labyrinth! How freakin’ cool is that!

Maggie Levin, who wrote and directed Into the Dark and My Valentine for Hulu, is writing the script for the film. Lisa Henson of The Jim Henson Company is producing along with Brian Henson, who is executive producing. Derrickson is also set to executive produce the film along with his frequent collaborator C. Robert Cargill.

The original film, which starred David Bowie and Jennifer Connelly, was released in 1986, and it has a huge cult following. I loved watching this movie when I was growing up, and it has since spawned tie-in novels, comic books, video games, and even an annual fan masquerade ball, which is said to be one the largest in the world.

The story for the original film follows sixteen-year-old Sarah, who is given thirteen hours to solve a labyrinth and rescue her baby brother Toby when her wish for him to be taken away is granted by the Goblin King Jareth.

It’s pretty cool that after all these years we are going to get a sequel! There are no details on what the story will entail, but Derrickson is a talented director, and I’m excited to see what he and the Jim Henson Company creative team have in store for us!
