Does STAR TREK: DISCOVERY Make CBS ALL ACCESS Worth It?

CBS pulled a fast one on us folks. They aired the first episode of their new series Star Trek: Discovery on the main CBS network. The problem is, to see the rest of the series, you have to subscribe to their streaming service CBS ALL ACCESS. Here is the question... is it worth the $6 a month. Let us go over the pros and cons in this situation.

After watching the first episode, I would have to say that it hooked me. The cast is great. The story is strong. It has enough ties to all of the Star Trek universe to keep fans happy and enough new storylines to keep newbies who enter this world interested. I have to say, I thoroughly enjoyed the show.

The actors in the show are great. Sonequa Martin-Green and Michelle Yeoh are solid in their roles as Commander Michael Burnham and Captain Georgiou respectively. As classic Star Trek characters go, they fit right in with the best of them. The real stand out to me is Doug Jones' portrayal of Lieutenant Saru. Saru is the first of his kind, Kelpien, in Starfleet. As to not to spoil anything, his character has as deep and complex of a backstory as some of the best characters of the past. The story itself is well written and luckily has just enough humor in it to keep it from taking itself too seriously. Once again, trying to keep this spoiler free, so that is all you get. 

Here is the big question I wanted to discuss... Is this show worth subscribing to CBS's streaming service? In my opinion, absolutely not! The show is great and I am super frustrated that I am choosing to wait for it to come out on Blu-ray. However, I just can't support another streaming service. They are purposely giving us this great gift of a new Star Trek show that is super good and then forcing us to pay for a subscription to a streaming service that we will not use after the season is over. They are only doing this to us to make money. Yes, that is usually the purpose of any company, however, with as solid of a show as this one is, they would make just as much money leaving the show on TV from advertisers.

So, I'm boycotting CBS ALL ACCESS because I just can't support the greed behind it. Hopefully, if enough of us don't join they will just bring Discovery to TV and this whole "streaming service" mess can be forgotten. So if you want to join me in my boycott, you can!
