DON BLUTH: SOMEWHERE OUT THERE Trailer Explores the Life and Career of the Legendary Animator Who Took on Disney
Copper Pot Pictures has released the first trailer for Don Bluth: Somewhere Out There, a new documentary exploring the life, career, and creative struggles of legendary animator Don Bluth, the filmmaker behind some of the greatest animated movies ever made.
I'm a huge fan of Don Bluth and the incredible films he's made throughout his career. Movies like The Secret of NIMH, An American Tail, The Land Before Time, and Anastasia are all fantastic examples of what traditional animation can accomplish when filmmakers aren't afraid to take creative risks. He also helped revolutionize video game animation with Dragon's Lair.
I've always appreciated what Bluth brought to the world of animation. His movies had a unique visual style, memorable characters, and stories that weren't afraid to get dark, emotional, or even a little scary. There was something special about the way he approached storytelling, and I really wish we saw more animated movies like his being made today.
I genuinely believe there's still a market for that kind of animation, and I'd love to see studios take more chances on traditionally animated features with that same level of artistry and ambition.
That's one reason I'm so excited about this documentary. Bluth took some massive risks throughout his career, including making the bold decision to walk away from Disney in 1979 and establish his own animation studio at a time when Disney dominated the industry.
He wasn't content to simply follow the established formula. He wanted to push traditional animation forward, tell different kinds of stories, and prove that Disney wasn't the only studio capable of producing incredible animated films.
Of course, that journey wasn't always easy, and that's what makes this documentary particularly interesting. Don Bluth: Somewhere Out There explores the filmmaker's personal and professional struggles, including the difficult balance between artistic ambition, commercial success, ego, and faith.
The documentary combines intimate new conversations with hundreds of hours of previously unseen archival footage and personal home videos, offering an unfiltered look at the man behind these beloved animated classics.
I'm a sucker for documentaries where creative people open up about their experiences, including their successes, failures, regrets, and the lessons they've learned along the way. I love hearing these stories directly from the people who lived them, especially when they're willing to be open about what really happened behind the scenes.
Bluth certainly has plenty of stories worth telling, and it'll be fascinating to hear his perspective on the battles he fought, the creative decisions he made, and how he looks back on everything now.
The official synopsis reads: “Before he defined childhood nostalgia and arcade history with Dragon’s Lair, An American Tail, The Land Before Time, and Anastasia, Don Bluth did the unthinkable: he walked away from Disney to wage an independent war for the soul of traditional animation.
“Weaving intimate modern conversations with hundreds of hours of never-before-seen personal archives, Don Bluth: Somewhere Out There reveals the unvarnished story of a master craftsman caught between art and commerce, ego and faith, and the cost of building an empire on his own terms.
The documentary is directed by Dave LaMattina and Chad N. Walker, the filmmaking team behind I Am Big Bird: The Caroll Spinney Story, Brownstones to Red Dirt, We Must Go, La Gran Madre, and Summer of '94.
What I appreciate most about Bluth's career is that he was willing to challenge the animation industry and pursue his own creative vision, even when the odds were stacked against him. Not everything he attempted worked out, but that's part of what makes his story worth exploring.
He helped create some truly incredible movies that have stayed with audiences for decades, and his influence on animation deserves to be celebrated.
This documentary looks great, and I'm particularly interested in seeing how deeply it explores the difficult parts of his career alongside all the incredible things he accomplished.
