Donald Glover Will Play Lando in an "Honest, True and Cool" Way in The HAN SOLO Film
Donald Glover is taking on one of the biggest roles of his life with playing Lando Calrissian in the upcoming Han Solo Star Wars film. I can only imagine the kind of pressure he's feeling by taking on such an iconic role, but he seems to have it under control and he's found his groove with the character. In a recent interview with Deadline, he talks about taking on the role and teases his approach to playing him, saying:
“It’s a lot of pressure but it’s also very exciting. He was my favorite character, too. I grew up on ‘Star Wars’. It’s just cool to see him again. I feel like people like him ’cause he has a lot of style, but also he’s a complicated character in this world. I think even Han isn’t as complicated as Lando is. From the first time you meet him, you don’t know whether to trust him or not, and you’re constantly not knowing whether to trust him. I like that about him.”
He goes on to say that playing Lando has been an enjoyable artistic experience for him. He seems to have fully embraced the role, which is pretty cool.
“For working under, like, a huge conglomerate, it’s actually been quite an enjoyable, artistic thing. I get to play him in a way that I think is honest and true and cool. And it’s great ’cause I didn’t have to write anything, I’m focused strictly on being this guy. And I really respect him and I respect the actor who played him before. I’ve learned a lot about this character, so it’s actually been really fulfilling and nice to just turn off everything else and focus on just being someone.”
I've been a fan of Glover since his early days in Derrick Comedy and I can't wait to see how his portrayal of Lando in this upcoming film turns out. The Han Solo film is currently in production, and is being directed by Phil Lord and Chris Miller.
All we know about the film at this point is that the story will focus on how young Han became the smuggler, thief, and scoundrel that we all know and love. The film is said to take place over the course of a seven-year stretch, covering Han’s life from 18 to 24. It will also give us the story of how he came into possession of the Millennium Falcon, how he met Chewbacca, and offer details on his friendship and early experiences with Lando Calrissian.
Glover stars alongside Alden Ehrenreich as Han, Joonas Suotamo as Chewbacca, and Woody Harrelson as Han’s mentor named Beckett. It also will feature Emilia Clarke, Thandie Newton, Michael K. Williams and Phoebe Waller-Bridge, who all take on undisclosed roles.
The Han Solo movie story arrives in theaters on May 25, 2018.
