Donnie Yen’s JOHN WICK Spinoff Film CAINE Set to Kick Off Production
The world of assassins and brutal elegance is getting a new chapter. Lionsgate is officially pushing forward with the next film in the John Wick universe, and this one puts the spotlight on a fan-favorite character.
The untitled Caine spinoff, led by Donnie Yen, is gearing up to begin production next month, and it’s going to carve out its own identity while staying true to what fans love about the franchise.
First introduced in John Wick: Chapter 4, Caine instantly became one of the most compelling figures in the series. A blind assassin bound by duty and driven by personal stakes, his story stood out in a world already packed with unforgettable killers.
This new film will pick up after the events of that movie, with Caine finally free from his obligations to the High Table and stepping into uncharted territory.
The project was first revealed at CinemaCon, and it didn’t take long for it to gain traction.
According to Lionsgate Motion Picture Group chair Adam Fogelson, the decision to center a film around Caine felt like the obvious next move.
He said, “It became clear after John Wick: Chapter 4 that fans were particularly intrigued by Caine, which made his story the most natural next chapter of the franchise.
“It’s truly exciting to be embarking on a strategic partnership with Donnie—he has the vision to bring to life this extension of the John Wick universe in a way that’s authentic to his own signature style, flair, and expertise as a filmmaker.”
Yen isn’t just starring this time, he’s also directing and executive producing, which gives him an exciting level of creative control.
If you’ve seen his work in films like Ip Man, Flash Point, and Hero, you already know he brings a very specific kind of intensity and precision to action filmmaking. That same energy is expected to shape this movie in a big way.
The script comes from Mattson Tomlin, who’s also working on The Batman: Part II and the adaptation of BRZRKR, with Michael McGrale contributing as co-writer. That combination suggests a story that won’t just rely on action, but will also dig into character and mythology.
Rina Sawayama is also returning as Akira, setting up what could be a very interesting dynamic following her character’s unresolved arc from Chapter 4.
Of course, it wouldn’t feel like a proper John Wick project without the core creative team. Producers Basil Iwanyk and Erica Lee are back alongside franchise architect Chad Stahelski, who produces through 87Eleven Entertainment. Even Keanu Reeves is staying involved as a producer.
Yen has made it clear that this isn’t just another action movie for him. He’s aiming to push things further, both physically and emotionally.
He explained, “What drew me to Caine is the contradiction. He carries love, responsibility, and sacrifice in a world built on consequence. That creates a very different kind of action hero.”
He continued, “This film is an opportunity to push the genre forward. My goal is to create the most definitive martial arts-infused action film ever made, one that honors what audiences love about John Wick while bringing a new emotional depth and visual language to the story.
“As both director and actor, I’m excited to shape this chapter in a way that reflects everything I’ve learned over decades in action cinema, while building something that feels entirely new.”
That ambition lines up perfectly with Yen’s track record. With John Wick: Chapter 4 pulling in over $447 million worldwide, the franchise is clearly still firing on all cylinders, and this spinoff has a real shot at keeping that momentum going.
Between Yen’s vision and the creative team that helped define the original films, this Caine project could end up being something special.
It expanding the John Wick universe and giving it a new perspective through one of its most intriguing characters.
