Don’t Expect Rey STAR WARS Movie News Anytime Soon as Daisy Ridley Says Updates Likely Won’t Come Until 2027
Star Wars fans might want to get comfortable and maybe meditate like a Jedi, because the wait for news on the long-awaited Rey movie is going to be a long one. According to Daisy Ridley, updates on the project probably aren’t coming anytime soon, and definitely not in the near future.
While chatting with USA Today, Ridley was asked if fans should expect any kind of update on the Rey-focused Star Wars film this year. Her answer was honest, casual, and very on brand for how these projects tend to move.
"Maybe. I don't know about 2026. In the future sometime, yeah."
So, if you were hoping for concrete news in 2025 or even 2026, it sounds like that optimism might need to be Force-pushed way down. 2027 seems like the earliest realistic window for anything substantial, at least from Ridley’s point of view.
The Rey movie was first announced during Star Wars Celebration 2023, where Disney and Lucasfilm revealed plans to bring Ridley back as Rey in a new chapter set after Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.
The story is expected to follow Rey as she works to rebuild the Jedi Order, stepping into a leadership role that pushes the franchise into a new era. At the time, the project had some serious momentum, including the announcement that Ms. Marvel director Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy would be at the helm.
Since that big reveal, the project has gone through several writers. Ridley addressed the stop-and-start nature of Hollywood development late last year in an interview, and her comments offered some insight into why patience is the name of the game.
"There are scripts that I read five years ago, and now I've gone, 'Oh, maybe they will actually happen,'" Ridley said. "I think over the years, I've learned how the reality of getting any film made is so massive.
“The hurdles are vast… But with [the Rey movie] particularly, I know that incredible voices and creatives are part of it, and I know the wait will be worth it."
Big franchise films take time, and Star Wars projects seem especially prone to long development cycles and shifting priorities.
In the meantime, Ridley isn’t sitting around waiting for a call from Lucasfilm. She recently starred in the horror thriller We Bury the Dead, a zombie film from director Zak Hilditch. In it, Ridley plays Ava, a physical therapist who travels from the US to Australia to find her missing husband after a zombie outbreak turns the world upside down.
So while Rey’s next chapter might be years away, Ridley fans will still get to see her on screen doing something very different and very intense. As for her Star Wars movie, may the patience be with you.
However, we might get to see her in Simon Kinberg’s upcoming trilogy, which could help set up her solo movie.
