Doug Liman to Direct Sci-Fi Thriller RAILHEAD

Art from Gods of Art

Warner Bros. has picked up the rights to an upcoming sci-fi children's book by Philip Reeve's called Railhead. The studio is also in negotiations with Edge of Tomorrow director Doug Liman to develop the project.

This may be a story that was written for ten and eleven year olds, but it sounds really cool. According to THR, "it's set in a futuristic world where trains run through space via portals. The main character is a petty thief hired to steal an object that happens to be more important than he was led to believe, setting off an adventure that could change the course of the galaxy. The report goes on to say that the story also has a variety of very colorful characters.

The authors previous books, Mortal Engines and Larklight, show that he has a very heavy interest in the steampunk and sci-fi genres. It sounds like we will see some of those elements in his latest creation with his inclusion of trains, and traveling around the galaxy through portals.

Some of the other films that Liman has made over the years include Swingers, Mr. and Mrs. Smith, Go, jumper and The Bourne Identity. For the most part I like what he's done, and this sounds like it would be a fun film project for him to take on.

The image above has nothing to do with the movie, I just thought it was a slick looking steam punk style train that would fit the post.
