I’ve got some exciting news for all you Downton Abbey fans! Focus Features has officially announced that the sequel started production last week and that the original principal cast has once again returned. It was also revealed that Downton Abbey 2 will be released in theaters on December 22nd, 2021.

Downton Abbey is one of those shows I never really saw myself enjoying, but when I started watching it, I loved the damn thing. The storytelling, character development, and writing is undeniably great. I enjoyed the movie that was made, and yes… I’m excited about the sequel.

The first film followed a royal visit to the Crawley family and Downton staff from the King and Queen of England. It’s unclear what the story for the sequel will entail. Downton Abbey creator Julian Fellowes once again wrote the film’s screenplay, with Simon Curtis (My Week with Marilyn) directing.

In addition to the original cast, Hugh Dancy (Hannibal), Laura Haddock (Guardians of the Galaxy), Nathalie Baye (Catch Me If You Can), and Dominic West (The Wire) will join in on the fun.

Focus Features chairman Peter Kujawski said in a statement, “There’s no place like home for the holidays, and we can’t imagine a better gift than getting to reunite with Julian, Gareth, and the entire Downton family in 2021 to bring the Crawley’s back home for their fans.”

Are you a fan of Downton Abbey and are you looking forward to this sequel?
