DUNE: PART THREE Director Denis Villeneuve Teases an Emotional Paul and Chani Story
Denis Villeneuve isn’t just finishing a trilogy with Dune: Part Three, he’s closing out a deeply personal journey that’s been shaping him since he first discovered Frank Herbert’s novels.
With the previous two films turning into massive sci-fi successes, the next chapter is shaping up to be something more intimate, more emotional, and possibly more devastating for its central characters.
Herbert’s Dune has been a cultural force since 1965, pulling in millions of readers and influencing generations of storytellers. While earlier adaptations struggled to connect, Villeneuve cracked the code with Dune in 2021 and followed it up with the even bigger Dune: Part Two in 2024.
Now, all eyes are on the third film, which is set to arrive in 2026 and marks Villeneuve’s final entry in the franchise.
The ending of Dune: Part Two left things in a heavy place. Paul Atreides, played by Timothée Chalamet, has fully embraced his role as a messianic leader, setting a violent path in motion.
Meanwhile, Chani, played by Zendaya, walks away from him, riding off on a sandworm after feeling betrayed. It’s not exactly a romantic cliffhanger. It’s complicated, messy, and full of tension.
That tension is exactly what Villeneuve wants to explore next.
Speaking at a recent trailer event, the director opened up about how much Dune: Part Three means to him personally, especially as it draws heavily from Herbert’s Dune Messiah. He said:
"It’s a very dark book, beautiful book. And this time, it’s all ... I will say this: It is one of my most personal films, if not my most personal film. So it’s a film that is very close to me and very contemporary."
That “dark” tone shouldn’t come as a surprise to fans familiar with the source material. Dune Messiah flips expectations and digs into the consequences of Paul’s rise to power. But what’s especially interesting here is how much emphasis Villeneuve is placing on Paul and Chani as a couple.
When asked to expand on that, he explained:
"Because it tells the story, it’s about the story of Paul and Chani, them struggling with their relationship, having the burden and incredible pressure from the world around them, and Paul having to find a way out of the cycle of violence.
“And there’s something about the way their love endures time and the way their relationship evolves, that study on the relationship of both characters, that is very personal to me."
That insight gives Dune: Part Three a different kind of weight. Sure, there will still be massive battles, political maneuvering, and all the epic sci-fi elements fans expect. But at its core, this is going to be a character-driven story about love under extreme pressure, and what happens when power starts to erode something deeply human.
It also puts a spotlight on Chalamet and Zendaya in a big way. Zendaya, in particular, could have a real moment here if the film leans into Chani’s emotional journey as much as it sounds like it will. There’s a lot of room for a powerful performance.
Villeneuve’s previous entries in the series have already earned their place as modern sci-fi classics, so expectations are high.
Now comes the hard part… waiting to see how it all plays out.
