DUNGEONS & DRAGONS Announces JOURNEYS THROUGH THE RADIANT CITY Adventure Anthology Book

Today, Dungeons & Dragons announced a new adventure anthology book called Journeys through the Radiant Citadel. Co-led by Ajit George and F. Wesley Schneider, this book looks absolutely incredible.

The Radiant Citadel is found deep in the Ethereal Plane and serves as a hub world of sorts to access various points of the multiverse. It is perfect for putting in any campaign whether it’s new, pre-existing, or a one-shot. The adventures can be easily adapted to fit any campaign or strung together to create their own campaign for you to enjoy.

There are 13 adventures in total with brand new ideas and inspirations included. Each adventure will have tools for helping DMs make the area feel more alive or adapt the world of the adventure into the DMs campaign setting. They will work with literally any campaign. The book will release on June 21 with main cover art by Evyn Fong and an alternate cover art available through local game stores by Sija Hong.

Journeys through the Radiant Citadel features a wide variety of genres and provides a little bit of something for everyone. For example, the first adventure is “Salted Legacy” by Surena Marie and will have the players participating in market games to gain the trust of locals.

This can include eating spicy peppers or doing a timed cooking challenge against giant prawns similar to Chopped. Marie cited her Thai heritage and Spirited Away as big inspirations for this adventure. She also listed Gravity Falls and anime as inspirations for a mystery adventure.

Another adventure is “Written in Blood” by Erin Roberts which will take place in Godsbreath. This adventure was inspired by the Black experience in the southern United States. Roberts shared that players and DMs may get a feel for the adventure if they know Lovecraft Country or Jordan Peele films.

Justice Arman has a new adventure in the book called “Shadow of the Sun” which is based on Iranian culture and Persian heritage. The Book of Kings was a huge influence on this adventure which sounds really cool. Players will have to deal with two warring factions and they’ll eventually find that neutrality is not an option.

I love the variety of influences that I’ve seen already for this anthology and thankfully, each adventure will include a pronunciation guide so that we don’t butcher pronunciations too much. There will be 11 new monsters for DMs to add to their tool belt, but there will not be any new Player Character options. The closest thing is that after an adventure, players can gain charms with magical benefits. Something to note is that these adventures were all built with the concept that combat isn’t necessary to resolve the encounters.

Other items of note include the fact that Journeys through the Radiant Citadel is the first D&D book with a person of color lead (George) and both cover arts were created by people of color. In total, there were over 50 people of color involved in the creation of the book to help influence it in some way. The full list of adventures is available below and the list of contributors includes, but is not limited to, the following: Dominique Dickey, Basheer Ghouse, Alastor Guzman, D. Fox Harrell, T.K. Johnson, Felice Tzehuei Kuan, Mimi Mondal, Mario Ortegón, Miyuki Jane Pinckard, Pam Punzalan, Terry H. Romero, and Stephanie Yoon.
