Dwayne Johnson Discusses His Passion and Dedication For DC's BLACK ADAM Which He's Been Working Towards For 10 Years
Dwayne Johnson is gearing up to finally start shooting his long-awaited film adaptation of DC’s Black Adam. This project has been brewing at Warner Bros. for years! How many years, you ask? Well, Johnson recently revealed that he has been looking forward to playing this character for over 10 years. I believe it’s been 12 years total, and the time has finally come to pull the trigger on it.
The actor recently shared a video on Instagram in which he discusses his passion and dedication for the character as well as the patience he’s had to wait for the right time to make the movie. Here’s what he had to say:
“Black Adam has been with me for over ten years now. That gives you an idea of how passionate I am about this project. How passionate our Seven Bucks is about this project. Warner Bros., New Line Cinemas, DC, they have been so incredibly supportive over the years. In 2008 was when we first started talking about this. So it has required patience by all of us as partners. And I’m a much different man and actor than I was ten years ago. Even then, ten years ago, I just wanted to wait for the timing to feel right. And it feels like now, the man that I’ve become, I’m able to bring a little bit of my own life lessons and philosophies and engrain them in the DNA of this character.”
I’m actually looking forward to seeing Johnson’s vision of this character. I’ve always liked the idea of seeing him in the role and I imagine he’ll bring together a great creative team of talent to bring this movie to life, which includes Jungle Cruise director Jaume Collet-Serra. In all seriousness, Black Adam could end up being Johnson’s biggest movie yet.
Johnson previously revealed in a tweet that production on the film is set to start in July of 2020. The original plan was to introduce Black Adam in Zachary Levi's Shazam!, but that changed when the studio thought it would be a better idea for Black Adam to get his own movie before having him face off with Shazam!, which I think was the best move.
Black Adam producer Hiram Garcia previously talked about Black Adam, saying:
"You're going to meet is you're going to meet a character who's going through a journey. He was created as a villain. And through the love of the fans and through some great writers and storytellers, he evolved into an antihero. The antihero is a character that we always loved and that we responded to. But we understand that there's been many aspects to Black Adam through him. But ultimately this is a guy who, he does have a moral compass, as skewed as it may be. And ultimately he is a guy that everything has always been driven by his family and what happens to them and he is never opposed to unleashing hell when you cross him. So, I think when you add in those elements of that DNA, those are things we're very aware of."
