Dwayne Johnson Reveals He's Working On His Broadway Debut

Dwayne Johnson was front and center with some big news on the red carpet at an N.Y.C. screening of Disney’s live-action Moana at the United Palace Theater last week.

The star announced to the attendees and press, “For the past two and a half to three years, we have been working on my Broadway debut. I’m revealing it now because it’s tequila talking.”

The former WWE star shared that he, theatrical producer Jeffrey Seller and Johnson’s frequent costar Kevin Hart “were going to do The Odd Couple” on Broadway, but scheduling difficulties prevented the project from coming together.

“We should’ve been great. Kevin is my best friend. I love him to death, and the truth is is he’s so booked for the next three to five years,” Johnson says. “That’s his schedule, that’s a reality. I totally get it. And I love it and I respect him for that.

“We do Jumanji, which we’ll promote that at the end of the year, but I’m not letting that dream go,” he adds with a laugh.

Johnson says that despite Hart’s unavailability for the near future, he, Seller, and Moana and Hamilton director Thomas Kail are still pursuing a theatrical opportunity together.

“So we’ll see, but maybe it’s The Odd Couple with Jeffrey. I don’t know, maybe it’s a musical and I could run around singing in keys that don’t exist,” he adds. “I might do a little dance. I might snatch my waist a little bit. We’ll see.”

Johnson has made his mark on Hollywood as a comedy and action star, as well as a franchise good luck charm. Broadway would be a whole new beast for the actor, but it sounds like he’s given it a lot of thought and he’s up for the challenge. “

This theater has so much history and mana to it,” Johnson told PEOPLE at the event, regarding his interest in a future theatrical run. “And I told Lin-Manuel [Miranda] when I saw him on stage, we were rehearsing earlier, I was like, ‘Dude, I feel it in this theater.’”

In the meantime, Jumanji: Open World is set to be released on December 25th later this year. Johnson is about to start filming Fast Forever, the latest film in the Fast & Furious franchise, which is set to be released on March 17, 2028.
