Dwayne Johnson's BLACK ADAM May Lose $100 Million; Unfortunately, It Didn't Really Change the Hierarchy of Power
After all of the crazy hype surrounding Dwayne Johnson’s Black Adam leading up to its release, it actually ended up being a disappointment. It didn’t really do much to change the hierarchy in the DC universe, which Johnson was promising since before he even started shooting the movie. Now, it’s being reported that the movie could lose up to $100 million.
Black Adam has made $387 million globally at the box office after seven weeks in theaters. Variety explains that after budget and marketing costs for the film, it needed to earn around $600 million worldwide to break even and surpass that make any kind of profit.
Box office experts are saying that the film will stall out with less than $400 million globally and according to estimates from “rival executives with knowledge of similar productions,” the movie could lose up to $100 million in its theatrical run.
As you might expect, sources at Warner Bros. are disputing those numbers. But, the fact of the matter is the movie didn’t do as well as everyone hoped it would. I was expecting the movie to be so much better than it was. I was excited about it! But, I ended up walking about of the theater feeling disappointed.
Black Adam was released on VOD a month after the movie was released in theaters, and it’s been doing well there, as it’s leading the VOD charts. But, the availability of it on VOD may have even contributed to it falling off at the box office.
I don’t expect to see Black Adam return under the leadership of James Gunn and Peter Safran.
