DYNAMIC DUO Casts Dick Grayson, Jason Todd, and Barbara Gordon as Chris Pine Is Eyed for Batman

Dynamic Duo is starting to put together one hell of a cast, with Dick Grayson, Jason Todd, Barbara Gordon, and even a potential Batman now in the mix.

The animated DC project from Swaybox is one of the more unusual movies coming from DC Studios. Rather than sticking with traditional animation, the film will combine miniatures, models, puppetry, animatronics, and computer animation to tell a story centered on two of Batman’s most famous Robins.

According to The InSneider, Mason Thames, known for The Black Phone and How to Train Your Dragon, has been cast as Dick Grayson. Logan Kim, who appeared in Ghostbusters: Afterlife and The Walking Dead: Dead City, will voice Jason Todd, while Marsai Martin (G20) is set to play Barbara Gordon.

The Batman casting could be particularly interesting. We previously reported that Chris Pine, whose DC history includes playing Steve Trevor in Wonder Woman, has reportedly been offered the role of Bruce Wayne/Batman.

That doesn’t necessarily make Pine the Batman of James Gunn and Peter Safran’s main DCU. Gunn confirmed earlier this year that Dynamic Duo will be an Elseworlds project rather than part of the primary DCU continuity.

Gunn has previously discussed having actors portray their characters across live-action and animation. Batman still needs to be cast for The Brave and the Bold, and there’s currently no indication that Pine taking this animated role would mean he’s also playing the DCU version of Bruce Wayne.

Another familiar Gunn collaborator could also be joining the movie. Lee Pace, who played Ronan the Accuser in Guardians of the Galaxy, is reportedly in line to voice Red Hood One, leader of the Red Hood gang.

That character choice opens up some fun possibilities. In DC Comics, Red Hood One is associated with the gang that eventually leads into the Joker’s origin. If Dynamic Duo borrows from that history, Pace could potentially end up voicing the man who becomes the Joker.

The story itself is taking Dick Grayson and Jason Todd in a very different direction from their familiar comic book origins.

During the 2026 Annecy International Animation Film Festival, Warner Bros. Animation revealed that the movie "follows Jason [and] Dick as [a couple] of street rats who name themselves the 'dynamic duo.'"

Their friendship eventually splits them onto separate paths. Dick ends up alongside Batman as Robin, while Jason joins the Red Hood gang. Anyone familiar with the complicated histories of these characters can probably see plenty of trouble waiting for them.

When the project was originally announced in 2024, James Gunn shared his excitement over what Swaybox was putting together:

"Over the moon excited to announce the newest DC Studios/Warner Bros Pictures Animation greenlit film for theaters, Dynamic Duo, the story of Robin...or should I say, Robins, as in Dick Grayson and Jason Todd," Gunn said.

"The first feature film from the visionary Swaybox, a mix of animation, puppetry, and CGI, a script from the wonderfully talented Matt Aldrich, produced with our partners at Matt Reeves’ 6th and Idaho. This is something special."

The movie is being produced with Matt Reeves and his 6th & Idaho banner, with Matt Aldrich writing the screenplay.

Between its handmade animation techniques, alternate take on Dick Grayson and Jason Todd, and an increasingly cool voice cast, Dynamic Duo is shaping up to be one of DC Studios’ stranger and more interesting theatrical experiments.

Dynamic Duo is currently scheduled to hit theaters on June 30, 2028.
