Ed Harris Saddles Up for YELLOWSTONE Spinoff THE DUTTON RANCH
The Yellowstone universe just landed another heavyweight actor. Ed Harris (Top Gun: Maverick) has officially joined the upcoming Paramount+ spinoff The Dutton Ranch, which will center on Beth Dutton and Rip Wheeler’s life after the chaos of the original series.
Harris joins Kelly Reilly, Cole Hauser, and Finn Little, who are reprising their roles as Beth, Rip, and Carter. Recently, Annette Bening was also added to the cast, with Chad Feehan serving as showrunner.
The series will follow Beth and Rip as they work to hold on to their hard-earned 7,000-acre sanctuary, protecting it from outside threats and teaching Carter how to become the man they believe he can be.
According to the official description, The Dutton Ranch “is a testament to the peace they sought, fought for, and nearly died for, as they’ve come to cherish their 7,000-acre land. With tough times and stiff competition, Beth and Rip do what they must to survive, all while ensuring Carter becomes the man he’s supposed to be.”
Harris will play Everett McKinney, described as “a weathered veteran and veterinarian who treats animals with compassion and understanding, and possesses a good sense of humor.”
Like Yellowstone, the story remains set in the present-day timeline, and this offshoot is said to share the closest DNA with the original series compared to any of Taylor Sheridan’s other Yellowstone projects.
The Yellowstone saga is massive. The flagship series, co-created by Taylor Sheridan and John Linson, follows the Dutton family as they protect the largest contiguous cattle ranch in the United States. Beyond that, we’ve already seen two successful prequels, 1883 and 1923, with more spin-offs on the way.
Alongside The Dutton Ranch, Paramount+ has The Madison, starring Michelle Pfeiffer as Stacy Clyburn, while CBS is working on Y: Marshals with Luke Grimes returning as Kayce Dutton. Other projects titled 1944 and 6666 are also in the works.
Harris is no stranger to commanding roles. He’s been nominated for four Academy Awards (Apollo 13, The Truman Show, Pollock, The Hours) and has an Emmy-winning television presence with credits like Westworld, Game Change, and Empire Falls. Most recently, fans saw him as The Man in Black in HBO’s Westworld.
On the film side, Harris recently starred opposite Jessica Lange in Long Day’s Journey into Night, currently making the festival rounds. Coming up, he’ll appear in Huntington alongside Glen Powell and Margaret Qualley, and in the pickleball comedy The Dink. Marvel fans will also catch him soon as Hollywood agent Neal Saroyan in Disney+’s Wonder Man.
The Dutton Ranch looks like it’s shaping up to be another must-watch for fans of Sheridan’s frontier saga.
