Eddie Murphy's COMING 2 AMERICA Makes The Move From Paramount Pictures To Amazon Studios
Eddie Murphy’s Coming 2 America is making a big distribution change. Paramount Pictures is selling the highly-anticipated sequel to the 80s comedy classic to Amazon Studios, in a deal which is said to be worth roughly $125 million.
With the pandemic and the lack of movies being released in movie theaters, the industry is dying. Studios are trying to be creative and find ways to make money, and selling properties off like this to streaming services is one that we’ve been seeing a lot of. So, it’s not surprising to see Paramount sell Coming 2 America to Amazon.
According to the report, Murphy, who is also a producer on the film, has to give his blessing before the deal is finalized. Final details are currently being hammered out, “including two complex consumer marketing tie-ins with McDonalds and whiskey brand Crown Royal, which are expected to transfer over to Amazon Studios with the film.”
In the sequel, “Prince Akeem is set to become king of the fictional country of Zamunda when he discovers he has a son he never knew about in America — a street-savvy Queens native named Lavelle. To honor the former king’s dying wish to groom his grandson as the crown prince, Akeem and Semmi set off to America.”
The movie was directed by Craig Brewer (Hustle & Flow, Black Snake Moan) and Murphy is joined by Arsenio Hall, James Earl Jones, Wesley Snipes, Leslie Jones, Paul Bates, Tracy Morgan and Jay Pharaoh.
The expected streaming premiere date is December 18th.
