Edgar Wright is best known for directing Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, and Baby Driver. He has several new projects in the pipeline, first of which is his upcoming horror thriller, Last Night in Soho. While Wright has made Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz, which dealt with zombies and murder, they really leaned more into the comedy genre. This next movie will go full out horror, which the director says is “very different” from what he’s done before.

In a recent interview with Empire, Wright explained:

“It will feel very different to my other films. But I’ve always liked films which have a slow burn into something else, and a lot of my movies have that feeling. Last Night starts in a more psychological realm and then starts to get increasingly intense as it goes along. And I always like to gravitate towards making a film in genres I miss, and there’s a certain type of psychological horror film that you got more in the ‘60s and ‘70s, that have something of an operatic nature. I’m using that kind of visual grammar.”

The movie stars Anya Taylor-Joy (Split) and Matt Smith (The Crown), as well as Thomasin Harcourt McKenzie (Jo Jo Rabbit), Synnøve Karlsen, Michael Ajao, Diana Rigg, Terence Stamp, and Rita Tushingham

Here’s the synopsis:

A young girl, passionate about fashion design, is mysteriously able to enter the 1960s where she encounters her idol, a dazzling wannabe singer. But 1960s London is not what it seems, and time seems to fall apart with shady consequences.

It’s exciting to hear Wright talk about this project. I love the movies he makes, and it’s going to be fun to see him do something new. We were supposed to see Last Night in Soho hit theaters later this year, but due to the pandemic, the film is set to release on April 23, 2021. Are you excited for Wright’s venture into horror?
