EDGE OF TOMORROW Director Doug Liman Likes His Sequel Idea MORE Than the Original Film
While chatting with Yahoo! Movies about his upcoming film American Made, director Doug Liman dropped some interesting tidbits about the Edge Of Tomorrow sequel, Live Die Repeat and Repeat. That is the tentative title for the sequel to the movie that starred 3x Academy Award-nominated superstar Tom Cruise and Golden Globe-winner Emily Blunt.
Liman says that the sequel's unofficial title originates from his intended title for the first film: Live Die Repeat. But back then the studio didn't agree with his vision and wanted the safer and studio-friendly Edge of Tomorrow. Liman said, “That was an epic war between me and Warner Bros. that I lost.” However, Liman did eventually and unofficially when the studio decided to rebrand the film on home video, releasing it on Blu-ray/DVD with a much larger emphasis on the film's "Live. Die. Repeat." tagline.
Through Liman's career he has never returned for a sequel and admits he is hesitant about returning for this one, but it looks like Cruise's rough story idea - combined with unbelievable fan support - really got his wheels turning.
“Normally there are financial decisions behind making a sequel, but with this, it was just about us coming up with a story. Really, it’s not a world I was eager to go back to, because dealing with time travel can make your head hurt. But there was so much affection from fans of the movie — more than any of my other movies! — that Tom and I felt that we owed it to ourselves to at least think about what a sequel could be.”
Liman teases that the movie will pick up a little further than we might have expected:
"It picks up where the last one left off, but then we go backwards in time. I love it way more than the story of the original film."
It will be an interesting film if Liman turns the clock back even further than he did in the first movie. You may remember, Cruise was pretty harmless and scared in the beginning and only after dying over and over again, did he become a battle-hardened warrior.
I'm really looking forward to seeing what Liman does with this film. What do you guys think? What would you like to see?
