It turns out that original Sopranos star Edie Falco ended up reprising her role as Carmela Soprano in the upcoming prequel film The Many Saints of Newark. Unfortunately the scene that she shot ended up not making the final cut of the film.

The news of Falco’s involvement came from the film’s director Alan Taylor during an interview with NME. It would have been Falco’s first official reprisal of the role since the finale of the series in 2007. Taylor shared:

"We had Edie come in and she dressed up as Carmela and we shot something with her and it wound up not being in the final movie but it was a great excuse to see her again.”

Taylor goes on to hint that Carmela’s role in the film would have opened The Many Saints of Newark as a framing device. He explained:

"There was some confusion as to how best launch the movie. How to start the movie. So we tried a few things and that was one of them. If you’ve seen the movie you’ll see that we begin it in a very different way now but that wasn’t always the idea."

While we won’t get to see Falco in the cut of the film that will be released, maybe she will be included in the special features when the film ends up on Blu-ray or something.

Here’s the synopsis for the movie, which was written by The Sopranos creator David Chase:

Young Anthony Soprano is growing up in one of the most tumultuous eras in Newark’s history, becoming a man just as rival gangsters begin to rise up and challenge the all-powerful DiMeo crime family’s hold over the increasingly race-torn city. Caught up in the changing times is the uncle he idolizes, Dickie Moltisanti, who struggles to manage both his professional and personal responsibilities—and whose influence over his impressionable nephew will help make the teenager into the all-powerful mob boss we’ll later come to know: Tony Soprano.

Young Tony Soprano is played by James Gandolfini’s son Michael Gandolfini, and he’s joined by Alessandro Nivola, Leslie Odom Jr., Jon Bernthal, Corey Stoll, Billy Magnussen, Michela De Rossi, and John Magaro, with Ray Liotta and Vera Farmiga.

The Many Saints of Newark is set to be released in theaters and on HBO Max on October 1.
