ELEMENTAL Gave Pixar a Surprising Win in the Box Office After a Sad Opening Weekend
Disney/Pixar’s latest animated feature, Elemental, opened at the box office in June to a dismally low number of $29.6 Million. It was the lowest opening for Pixar since the studio launched in 1995 with Toy Story. While this felt like a huge loss for the studio, the movie wasn’t to be counted out just because of its opening weekend!
Elemental crossed $400 million at the global box office this week, making it the first original film to pass $400 million at the box office since the start of the pandemic. Every other film to cross the threshold has been part of a franchise or based on some kind of existing property.
This has seemed like the summer that crowds have really gotten back to the theaters, and it shows in the massive numbers of Barbie, Oppenheimer, and even Elemental.
The movie is set in Element City, where a host of different elements live and work including air, earth, water, and fire. Ember is described as “a quick-witted and fiery woman who’s always stayed close to home in Firetown.” But, when she meets Wade, her eyes are open to a whole new world.
In the story, Ember “finally ventures out of her comfort zone to explore this spectacular world born from the imaginations of Pixar’s filmmakers and specifically crafted for the big-screen experience. Element City is inspired by big cities around the globe and embraces theorized contributions from each elemental community—from giant pine-tree-like buildings and waterfall skyscrapers to a tornado-shaped arena called Cyclone Stadium.”
