Elijah Wood Is Open to Return for a Frodo Cameo in Amazon's LORD OF THE RINGS Series
We still don’t really know what to expect from Amazon’s highly-anticipated Lord of the Rings series that they are currently developing. But during a recent interview with IndieWire, Elijah Wood commented on the series and said he would “absolutely” be open to reprising his role as Frodo as long as it would make sense to the story. When asked about it he said:
“If there was a world where that made sense and was organic to what they’re doing then yes. Look, any excuse to get to go to New Zealand to work on something I am absolutely there.”
He also criticized the show’s potential title saying that it’s misleading. He explains:
“They’re calling it The Lord of the Rings, but I think that’s slightly misleading. From what I understand, the material they are working on exists chronologically further back in history in the lore of Lord of the Rings or Middle-earth than any characters represented in Lord of the Rings. It sounds more ‘Silmarillion’ era. Not to get nerdy, but it’s the Second Age of Middle-earth.”
I don’t really know if the show is going to be titled The Lord of the Rings, it’s just what everyone is calling it right now because I don’t believe the actual title of the show has been revealed yet. But, we’ll see. Regardless, it would be fun to see Wood back as Frodo again.
The series will be set in the Second Age, which is about 3,000 years of history between the series and the beginning of The Lord of the Rings. Amazon has committed to five seasons of the series, and they will spend over a billion dollars bringing the story to life.
The show’s official Twitter account previously shared an image of a map teasing the setting along with two messages: “One Ring to rule them all, One Ring to find them, One Ring to bring them all, and in the darkness bind them, In the Land of Mordor where the Shadows lie,” as well as, “Welcome to the Second Age.”
In the Tolkien mythology, the Second Age was the time in which the Rings of Power, including Sauron’s One Ring, came into existence. It was also teased that the film could involve the island of Numenor. The series will be shot in New Zealand, and the studio also announced that they are already moving forward on Season 2.
Game of Thrones alum Bryan Cogman is serving as a consulting producer on the show, and J.A. Bayona (A Monster Calls, Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom) is set to direct multiple episodes. J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay are leading the charge on the project.
The cast of the series includes Robert Aramayo, Maxim Baldry, Owain Arthur, Nazanin Boniadi, Tom Budge, Morfydd Clark, Ismael Cruz Córdova, Ema Horvath, Markella Kavenagh, Joseph Mawle, Tyroe Muhafidin, Sophia Nomvete, Megan Richards, Dylan Smith, Charlie Vickers, and Daniel Weyman.
The Lord of the Rings series is produced by Amazon Studios in cooperation with the Tolkien Estate and Trust, HarperCollins, and New Line Cinema. It is expected to debut in 2021.
