Elijah Wood Offers Update on His Push to Revive A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET and the Direction He Wants To Take It
Last year, Elijah Wood revealed that he was interested in reviving the A Nightmare on Elm Street horror franchise. He has now offered an update on his push to make this happen and also shares his thoughts on the direction he would want to take the next installment of the franchise.
As of right now, New Line Cinema holds the rights to the franchise, but at the same time Wes Craven’s estate has started taking pitches for a new installment. So, it is unclear who is actually running things at the moment. With those complications, Wood has not talked to anyone yet, but he tells ComingSoon that “it’d be fun to get a shot at it.”
When asked if he would be interested in playing Freddy Kreuger ,the actor said no and then said that Robert Englund would have to come back:
“You have to bring Robert Englund back for one more film. I think, especially if you’re going to open up a new franchise and take it in different directions, you have to establish it with him and then you can move on. I don’t think it’s interesting to tell the same story over and over again, we don’t need another origin story of Freddy Krueger, I don’t think it should even really be so much about Freddy.”
I agree, Englund has to be a part of it, and the next film has to go in a different direction and do something unique. The last time we saw Englund in the role was in an episode of The Goldbergs. Wood went on to reveal that his favorite film in the franchise is 1994’s New Nightmare, the final installment in the original series. That’s certainly an interesting choice. I know a lot of fans won’t agree with him, but he says that the fans don’t give it “nearly enough love compared to other installments.”
“‘Scream’ owes a real debt to ‘New Nightmare. That was the first time the notion of referencing horror movies in another horror movie was possible, it had never really been done before.”
I never thought of that before, but he’s totally right! It’s been a long time since I’ve seen New Nightmare, but I think I’m going to revisit it now.
What would you like to see from a new Nightmare on Elm Street movie?
