Elizabeth Olsen Defends Superhero Movies and Opens Up About Her MCU Future as the Scarlet Witch

It’s been a few years since Elizabeth Olsen brought Wanda Maximoff to life in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, leaving fans wondering if the Scarlet Witch’s story was truly over.

Buried beneath Mount Wundagore after a devastating multiversal rampage, her fate has remained one of the MCU’s biggest mysteries. But Olsen recently shared her thoughts about her time as Wanda, her possible future in the franchise, and why she still stands by the superhero genre.

During a recent interview with InStyle, Olsen reflected on her return as Wanda in Marvel Zombies, part of Marvel Animation’s lineup. However, she admitted it’s been a long time since she recorded those lines.

"I recorded that so long ago, I’m sorry," she said. "It's so crazy that...I feel terrible that I don't...I can't speak more to it."

That makes sense considering she likely voiced the role while filming Multiverse of Madness, meaning years have passed since then. When asked if Wanda is still alive in the MCU, Olsen didn’t have any insider answers.

"No idea," she replied.

Still, many fans believe her return is just a matter of time, especially with rumors swirling about Avengers: Doomsday.

When talking about what draws her back to Marvel, Olsen lit up while describing the experience of working on those massive productions.

"And goofy. It’s ridiculous," she said with a laugh. "We're grown people behaving like children on a playground. We're flying. We're shooting things out of our hands.

“And it’s a character that I've gotten to return to so many times over 10 years. It’s good to put her down and then I miss her and I want her back. I'd jump at the opportunity to be in her shoes again."

For Olsen, making these movies are more about the people behind it. "It's the consistency of a community and a job, which is hard to find. The insane camera movement, stunt work, and special effects, visual effects that are happening in real time.

“It’s a lot of coordination, it's hundreds and hundreds of people on set, and it's a powerful thing to be a part of all those people working towards one goal. The people doing the visual effects are artists."

As the conversation turned to the recent wave of “superhero fatigue,” Olsen didn’t hesitate to defend the genre and the craftsmanship that goes into every project.

"The soul, the spirit, the heart is fulfilled doing it. It does mean something. I care about the acting being great—everyone does," she explained. "There are hundreds of people doing their job to the highest degree.

“That’s why it's frustrating for them to not be acknowledged for the artistry that is involved. A lot happens in visual effects afterwards—'cause we can't actually fly, you know?"

It’s clear Olsen has deep respect for the collaborative effort that goes into making these films, and her passion for Wanda Maximoff hasn’t faded. While Marvel fans eagerly await any confirmation of her next appearance, the studio has been teasing Wanda’s return across social media, possibly hinting at VisionQuest.

We’ll just have to wait and see what happened with the future of Scarlet Witch, but chances are she will return.
