WandaVision gave fans a taste of what was to come in the future of the MCU, and now Loki is furthering the story, cracking open the multiverse that will be fully explored in next spring’s sequel, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Wanda herself, aka the Scarlet Witch, played by Elizabeth Olsen, will have a major role in the film, and after recently wrapping filming on the movie, Olsen gave a tease of the tone of the film, which is being directed by iconic horror director Sam Raimi.

In a recent interview with Vanity Fair, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness co-writer Michael Waldron compared the character of Doctor Strange to Indiana Jones, saying:

"He’s Indiana Jones in a cloak to me. He’s a hero who can take a punch. That’s what made those Harrison Ford heroes so great. Those guys get their asses kicked. Look at Stephen Strange in the first movie. He’s really getting beat up but he’s very capable and everything. I can tell you that it’s a ride…very Sam Raimi. The film is incredibly visually thrilling. John Mathieson, our D.P., who shot Gladiator and Logan—I think the look of it is going to be unlike anything you’ve seen in the MCU before."

While Olsen loves Indiana Jones, she explains that this film is much darker and scarier than any of the Indy flicks we’ve seen before. She explains:

"I think it’s scarier than Indiana Jones. I think it definitely feels more Sam Raimi than that. So maybe that was the goal, but it definitely became something darker I think. Yea, not like [Raimi's] western [stuff]... Yes, the horror genre feeling of constant fear and thrill and misleads and playing with camera, playing with how the perspective of the depth of field in order to make the audience feel more anxious... It’s more... I think it's more than like a glossy Indiana Jones movie. Which I love Indiana Jones, but I feel like it has a darker thing going on."

I think everything in the MCU is darker than Indiana Jones! We are just dealing with things on an intergalactic level, so the threats are bigger, and the direction the fourth phase is going in is for sure a lot more scary and strange than what we’ve seen so far. I can’t wait for it all to unfold. It’s been fun watching the MCU series that have come to Disney+ over this year, but it’s time to get back to the theatre and see what Marvel has in store for us.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is set to hit theaters on March 25, 2022.
