When Elizabeth Olsen made her big debut in the MCU as Wanda Maximoff, she had a pretty heavy accent. Over the course of the films she’s appeared in, that accent seems to have been all over the place. Sometimes you can hear the accent, sometimes you can’t.

Well, when she returns for director Sam Raimi’s Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, she will have that heavy accent of hers back. While speaking to Rolling Stone, Olsen was asked about the character’s accent and noted that while it had been toned down drastically as the films went on, that’s going to change:

“So that started with Civil War. The Russos [directors Anthony and Joseph Russo] said, ‘Can she just have a softer accent, because she’s been in America, and has to have been speaking English more.’ So I was like, sure. I do have to say that in [Wanda’s next appearance, in 2022’s] Dr. Strange [in the Multiverse of Madness], after the experience she has in WandaVision, she goes back to an accent that’s more true to her.”

So I guess she’ll heavily be tapping into her roots as her story arc moves forward, and I guess that means she’s not going to hold back on the accent.

Olsen then went on to explain that she feels more ownership over Wanda, and that she has an easier time coming to terms with how to express the character. She also says that the way she spoke in WandaVision was Wanda purposely trying to hold on to the ideals of the American sitcom.

“Now that I feel a little bit more ownership of the character, I feel like she does retreat back to having this more honest expression. The sitcom part was totally different, because she’s trying to hold on to an American sitcom world and play the part the best she can.”

Benedict Cumberbatch stars in the film, and he is also joined by Benedict Wong, Chiwetel Ejiofor, and Rachel McAdams, who will be back as Wong, Karl Mordo, and Christine Palmer, respectively. Xochitl Gomez has also joined the cast as America Chavez.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is set to be released on March 25, 2022.
