Elle Fanning Rumored to Be in Talks for Mystique in Marvel’s X-MEN Reboot
Marvel Studios may have found another actress to bring Mystique back to the big screen, and this is a great casting possibility.
Elle Fanning is reportedly in talks to play the blue-skinned mutant in Marvel Studios’ upcoming X-Men. The role has previously been linked to Lady Gaga, but Fanning is now the latest name rumored to be circling the character as Marvel puts together its new generation of mutants.
The report comes from Beyond Reporter on X, which claims: “Elle Fanning is in talks with Marvel Studios To Play Mystique in Marvel’s X-Men.”
Fans have already started weighing in on the possibility across social media, with plenty of positive reactions to the potential casting. For now, though, this should be treated as a rumor. Neither Marvel Studios nor Fanning has confirmed that talks are happening or that she has landed the role.
Fanning would certainly be a fun choice for Mystique, a character previously played by Rebecca Romijn and Jennifer Lawrence in Fox's X-Men films.
The shapeshifting mutant has been portrayed as everything from an enemy of the X-Men to a reluctant ally, giving Marvel plenty of directions to take her in this new version.
The upcoming X-Men movie is being directed by Jake Schreier, who previously worked with Marvel Studios on Thunderbolts*. The reported cast is already filling up with some major mutant names.
Sadie Sink is set to play Jean Grey, with Inde Navarrette as Rogue, Samara Weaving as Emma Frost, and Maya Boyd as Storm. Christopher Abbott will play Charles Xavier, better known as Professor X, while Kit Connor is taking on Scott Summers, aka Cyclops.
The roster also includes Adam Driver as Nathaniel Milbury, aka Mister Sinister, and Asa Germann as Warren Worthington III, aka Angel. Lee Sung Jin and Joanna Calo are writing the screenplay.
We still don't know what kind of mutant adventure Schreier and his team are putting together or how Mystique might factor into it.
If the Fanning rumor turns out to be legit, though, she would me an awesome addition to Marvel's new X-Men crew. Mystique is a great character for an actor to dig into, especially if Marvel leans into her complicated loyalties and morally messy history rather than treating her as a straightforward villain.
Marvel Studios currently has the untitled X-Men movie scheduled to hit theaters on May 5, 2028.
