Emily Blunt and Josh Brolin Will Reportedly Join Benicio Del Toro in SICARIO 2

Denis Villeneuve's cartel thriller Sicario was one of the most compelling movies of 2015, and almost immediately after it hit theaters, word came out that Lionsgate was developing a sequel. Early word said that it would center around Benicio Del Toro's mysterious hitman character, but now the film's producers tell THR that not only will Del Toro come back, but stars Emily Blunt and Josh Brolin are lined up to return as well:

Molly Smith: We're in full development with the studio. I just got a draft [of a script from writer Taylor Sheridan], and we're really excited.
Thad Luckinbill: We've circulated it to the reps, and everybody [from the cast of the original is] on board.
Trent Luckinbill: Taylor's a really great world-builder. He's got that kind of modern Western voice, which is in vogue right now. And he did it again [with the sequel]. It's a great big world. We can't reveal the plot, but you'll see [Emily Blunt, Benicio Del Toro and Josh Brolin] all come back. You have such a great character with Benicio, who was as dark as he was and still so loved. That character resonates so well with audiences. People want to know what happened to him, so it's a perfect foray for us to explore. Obviously we would love it if Denis could [direct]. He's a busy man, but he's certainly part of the process with us right now.

There's no word yet on whether Villeneuve could come back to direct the sequel, but they may have to wait on him for a little while because he's going to be busy with Blade Runner 2 in the immediate future. For that matter, Brolin might be busy playing Thanos in Avengers: Infinity War, so we'll have to see if they can work some scheduling magic and get this team to reunite. Sicario didn't seem like a film that was tailor made for a follow-up, but I'm definitely intrigued to see how it plays out.
