Emily Blunt Says She Laughed When Tom Cruise Told Her to "Stop Being Such a P***y" on the Set of EDGE OF TOMORROW

Director Doug Liman’s 2014 film Edge of Tomorrow is a sci-fi action flick that takes place on a futuristic Earth, which falls under attack from invincible aliens, with no military unit in the world able to beat them. Maj. William Cage (Tom Cruise), an officer who has never seen combat, is assigned to a suicide mission. Killed within moments, Cage finds himself thrown into a time loop, in which he relives the same brutal fight -- and his death -- over and over again. However, Cage's fighting skills improve with each encore, bringing him and a comrade (Emily Blunt) ever closer to defeating the aliens.

Like any action movie starring Tom Cruise, the film involves wild stunts, which the actor is always down to try himself. So when Emily Blunt came on set and took issue with the 85-pound suit she had to wear, Cruise had some words for her.

In a recent interview on the “SmartLess” podcast, Blunt explained:

“We had to wear these enormous suits, which I think would’ve been great if we had CGI’d them, but we wanted to do it in a tactile way. When you hear the word ‘tactile,’ you think that sounds nice and cozy. There was nothing cozy about these suits. It was like 85 pounds. It was so heavy. The first time I put it on I started to cry, and [Cruise] didn’t know what to do.”

Blunt said Cruise “stared at her,” adding:

“I was like, ‘Tom, I’m not sure how I’m going to get through this shoot,’ and just started to cry. I said, ‘I’m feeling a bit panicky about the whole shoot.’ He just stared at me for a long time, not knowing what to do, and he goes, ‘Come on, stop being such a pussy, ok?’ I did laugh, and then we got through it, but the training was intense.”

So much for a pep talk! But it sounds like it was all in jest, so as long as it was intended and taken that way, I suppose it all worked out alright. As for the future of this story, Liman, Cruise, and Blunt have long discussed wanting to return for a sequel, but the project has never officially gotten off the ground at Warner Bros.

Blunt talked about the possibility of a sequel in a recent CinemaBlend interview (via IndieWire), saying:

“We wanted to. Honestly, I think the movie’s too expensive. Yeah, I don’t know how we’re going to do it. I think that it’s hard to align everyone’s schedules. I would love it. [Director] Doug Liman would love it. Tom would love it. We’d all love to do it, but I think until we figure out what’s going on with the industry – honestly, I think we need to figure out what is the next road map for the kinds of films that people want to make.”

That’s too bad. The last update made it sound like it was definitely moving forward. I feel like it’s still a distinct possibility, so we will just have to keep our fingers crossed.
