Emma Stone Says That CRUELLA is Different From JOKER in a Lot of Ways, and New Images Released
When the first trailer for Disney’s Cruella dropped, a lot of fans were comparing it to DC’s mega-hit film Joker. There were definitely similarities with the tone and main character descending into madness. But, according to the Cruella star Emma Stone, the two films are different in many ways. During with a recent interview with Total Film, the actress said:
"It’s hard to call someone a bad ’un completely when you see them from the very beginning. It’s very different from Joker in many ways. I would never even remotely compare myself to Joaquin Phoenix. I wish I was more like him.”
Does anyone really wish they could be more like Joaquin Phoenix? Cruella is obviously different from Joker, but there are certainly some similarities. Cruella director Craig Gillespie understands the cultural point of reference and goes on to explain how the films are different:
“There are some really deep, emotional things that Cruella’s dealing with that send her to the villainous darker side. So in that sense, it is [similar]. But it’s definitely its own thing. Just to sort of reframe Cruella, I thought it was important to show this darker side of her. But there’s going to be a lot of fun, a lot of humor in it. There’s a lot of absolutely delightful banter and rhythm to the style of it, which is different from Joker.”
I can see the delightful banter and rhythm that Gillespie is talking about in the trailers that have been released and I’m looking forward to seeing more of that in the film. This is a Disney movie, it’s not going to go to the dark places that the Joker went.
Cruella is about the “rebellious early days of one of cinemas most notorious – and notoriously fashionable – villains, the legendary Cruella de Vil. Cruella, which is set in 1970s London amidst the punk rock revolution, follows a young grifter named Estella, a clever and creative girl determined to make a name for herself with her designs. She befriends a pair of young thieves who appreciate her appetite for mischief, and together they are able to build a life for themselves on the London streets. One day, Estella's flair for fashion catches the eye of the Baroness von Hellman, a fashion legend who is devastatingly chic and terrifyingly haute. But their relationship sets in motion a course of events and revelations that will cause Estella to embrace her wicked side and become the raucous, fashionable and revenge-bent Cruella.”
The movie also stars Mark Strong, Paul Walter Hauser, Emily Beecham, Joel Fry, Kirby Howell-Baptiste, and John McCrea.
Cruella will be released in theaters on May 28th, 2021. Check out a few new photos from the film below.
