AVENGERS: ENDGAME Directors Talk About a Lack of Reunion Scenes

Avengers: Endgame was a crazy movie with lots of crazy moments, emotional moments, and crazy emotional moments. We’re going to talk about some things that did not happen in the film, so if you haven’t watched the film yet, minimize this tab and come back after you’ve seen the film.

In a recent episode of Happy Sad Confused, Anthony and Joe Russo talked about the big battle at the end of the film. During their chat, Joe talked about finding the right pacing and feel for everything and how sometimes that means leaving out some things. In fact, one of the things that we did not see in Endgame is a lot of reunion scenes.

There’s always more beats to the battle, battles traditionally of this scale tend to be bloated. And then we try to pull them down to the very essential elements

Sometimes when you get in the edit room and start playing around with it, the structure doesn’t sustain — or you find a better structure, and a better path through it. And some beats you think are gonna work don’t work quite as well as others, and then there’s sort of battle fatigue.

There were other beats. I think there was like a Rocket and Groot reunion moment, there might have been an Ant-Man and the Wasp reunion moment, but it just started to feel like an endless series of reunions where there are future movies coming, and those moments can be had in a different time.

I’m glad we didn’t have all those scenes. It would’ve pulled us out of the moment I think, and I totally understand why they ended up cutting a lot of these reunions out. Are you glad these moments got cut? Do you hope to see these in the Deleted Scenes section of the home release?
