Enjoy an Exhibit Highlighting the Films from LAIKA at the Museum of Moving Image Through Next August
I love LAIKA’s animated films. They always have incredible stories to tell and the stop-motion animation is absolutely mind boggling. The Museum of the Moving Image (MoMI) in Astoria, New York recently launched the LAIKA: Life in Stop Motion exhibit in partnership with the Oscar, Golden Globe, and BAFTA-winning studio. The exhibit will run through August 27, 2023 and features puppets, sets, and video clips from LAIKA’s first five films. There’s also an installation with 2D character figures and environments from the films that you can use to create your very own stop-motion videos and then share them online with friends and family. This sounds like so much fun! Barbara Miller from MoMI said:
LAIKA has created unforgettable characters and stories using stop-motion animation, with hand-crafted techniques that date from the emergence of cinema. At the same time, they have done more than any other studio to bring this art form into the digital age. They are perfect partners for this exhibit, which invites visitors of all ages to appreciate the painstaking work of stop-motion animation, and experiment with making their own short films.
David Burke of LAIKA shared:
LAIKA has established a unique identity in the world of cinema with its original and timeless stories amid advancing stop-motion animation with technological innovations. We share with MoMI a love of cinema and are delighted that the ‘hands on’ element of our exhibit allows fans to enjoy and embrace LAIKA’s singular way of filmmaking.
MoMI’s Redstone Theater will also house screenings of LAIKA films to accompany the exhibit. I really want to visit MoMI now. This is very exciting! Will you visit the LAIKA: Life in Stop Motion exhibit? You can check out some photos from the exhibit courtesy of Christos Katsiaouni and MiMO.
