Epic Scale Battle in THE RINGS OF POWER Season 2 Will Span Three Episodes and It Took a Year of Planning

The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power Season 2 is going to bring to life a massive-scale battle from J.R.R. Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings with the Siege of Eregion.

It’s been revealed that this battle is going to be so big and epic that it will span three entire episodes of the series. Showrunners Patrick McKay and J.D. Payne also say their vision of this battle took a year of planning to bring to life.

McKay talked about the battle in an interview with GamesRadar+, saying: "The Siege of Eregion is the big climax at the end of season 2. It starts in episode 6, goes through 7 and goes deep into 8, and each sequence is a different phase of this battle.

“Siege battles take place historically, not over a night or a day, but over months, and we wanted you to feel the weight of that, we wanted you to feel the layers of each of that."

I love that they have put a lot of thought and planning into their adaptation of this battle, and McKay goes on to say it’s all completely character-driven.

He explained: "It's not just action for action’s sake. It's not three episodes of wall-to-wall action. It is a battle that spans three episodes and within that, there's an enormous amount of emotion. There are some amazing performances. All of our storylines and characters are sort of coming together."

Elrond (Robert Aramayo) is key to the Siege as he’s been sent by Gil-galad to liberate the city, and will be a huge focal point in the later episodes.

Mckay teases: "Elrond goes this season from being a politician to being a warrior and a general, and if you know anything about the lore, the results are ultimately going to be tragic.”

"Rob's performance is absolutely spectacular and stirring, we're really excited for people to see. So it is epic in scope and required a year of planning and preparation and many weeks of shooting.

“But hopefully it's quite emotional and even intimate at times when you actually strap in and watch."

Other actors in the series tease how big the conclusion will be with Prince Durin star Owain Arthur saying: it’s "epic", while his co-star Sophie Nomvete, who plays Disa, describes it as "haunting".

Isildur star Maxim Baldry goes on to saying: "Season 1 was very expositional, we had to set up a lot of characters, we had to set up a lot of worlds.

"In Season 2, we are right in the thick of it. We're in the middle of it and it's just driving, there's a force for a lot of the episodes.

“There's a battle over three episodes, it's just expansive, it's energetic, and there's just anxiety, and it pulls you on this journey."

I can’t wait to see how exactly the Siege of Eregion will be brought to life! Sounds like something we should be seeing on the big screen!

The series takes place “thousands of years before the events of J.R.R. Tolkien's The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, and will take viewers back to an era in which great powers were forged, kingdoms rose to glory and fell to ruin, unlikely heroes were tested, hope hung by the finest of threads, and the greatest villain that ever flowed from Tolkien's pen threatened to cover all the world in darkness.

“Beginning in a time of relative peace, the series follows an ensemble cast of characters, both familiar and new, as they confront the long-feared re-emergence of evil to Middle-earth.

“From the darkest depths of the Misty Mountains, to the majestic forests of the elf-capital of Lindon, to the breathtaking island kingdom of Númenor, to the furthest reaches of the map, these kingdoms and characters will carve out legacies that live on long after they are gone.”

In Season 2, “Sauron has returned. Cast out by Galadriel, without army or ally, the rising Dark Lord must now rely on his own cunning to rebuild his strength and oversee the creation of the Rings of Power, which will allow him to bind all the peoples of Middle-earth to his sinister will.

“Building on Season 1’s epic scope and ambition, Season 2 of Amazon’s The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power plunges even its most beloved and vulnerable characters into a rising tide of darkness, challenging each to find their place in a world that is increasingly on the brink of calamity.

“Elves and dwarves, orcs and men, wizards and Harfoots… as friendships are strained and kingdoms begin to fracture, the forces of good will struggle ever more valiantly to hold on to what matters to them most of all… each other.”

The Rings of Power Season 2 premieres August 29th on Prime Video.
