ETERNALS Star Barry Keoghan Shares Why He Thinks Marvel Fans Didn't Like the Movie
When Marvel released Eternals it was met with a lot of mixed reactions from fans. It seemed to me like most fans didn’t care for it. The movie definitely had a different tone and vibe to it, and that was due to the fact the studio brought in indie filmmaker Chloe Zhao to direct the movie.
There were a few elements of the film that I did like, but overall, for me, the story, script, and how some of the characters were developed just didn’t click with me. The movie definitely opened up a door to a whole new epic Marvel mythology in the MCU, one that I was excited about! But, this movie didn’t quite capture the grand scale that Jack Kirby’s comic books conveyed, which is what I was expecting.
During a recent interview, Barry Keoghan, who played Druig in the movie, shared his thoughts on why he thinks the film didn’t click with fans:
"I think Chloe brought a whole kind of feel to it. You know? So Chloe brings -- as you've seen from her past films -- raw performances and really, really touching performances. I don't think it was… I think it was new. I think it was just new. It was new for the Marvel world."
Yes, it was new, and I totally understand capturing raw and touching performances, but when the character development and story are weak, those things couldn’t really shine. I know that some people liked the movie, though! For me, I think it would have been much better had they gone full-on Jack Kirby.
The story spans thousands of years and follows a group of immortal heroes from beyond the stars who had protected the Earth since the dawn of man. When monstrous creatures called the Deviants, long thought lost to history, mysteriously return, the Eternals are forced to reunite in order to defend humanity once again.
The Eternals cast also includes Angelina Jolie as Thena, Richard Madden as Ikaris, Kumail Nanjiani as Kingo, Lauren Ridloff as Makkari, Brian Tyree Henry as Phastos, Salma Hayek as Ajak, Lia McHugh as Sprite, Don Lee as Gilgamesh, Gemma Chan as Sersi, and Kit Harington as Dane Whitman, a.k.a. Black Knight.
