EVIL DEAD Remake Director Fede Alvarez Set to Direct GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO Sequel for 2018

At long last Sony Pictures is finally moving forward with their sequel to The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo. Evil Dead remake and Don't Breathe director Fede Alvarez is officially set to direct the film, which will also feature a whole new cast.

This sequel will be called The Girl in the Spider's Web, and the studio has set the release date for October 5th, 2018. I actually really like Alvarez as a director, but I'm still bummed out that Rooney Mara, and Daniel Craig won't be returning, but David Fincher is attached as a producer. That was such an awesome team of talent that did an incredible job with the first movie. Alvarez had this to say in a statement:

“I’m hugely excited and grateful for this opportunity. Sony has become family to me and I can’t think of a more thrilling project to celebrate our relationship. Lisbeth Salander is the kind of character any director dreams of bringing to life. We’ve got a great script and now comes the most fun part – finding our Lisbeth.”

It'll be interesting to see who Alvarez and the studio end up casting in the main roles this time around. It seems like Alvarez likes to work with Jane Levy, and it seems like the kind of role she might be able to fit into, but there's no indication that's who he'll bring on to play Lisbeth. Sanford Panitch, president of Columbia Pictures, added:

“In all of contemporary literature, Lisbeth Salander is completely sui generis – probably one of the greatest female literary characters of all time in my view. Modern punk defiance personified, she is unforgettable in every incarnation, truly one of the most compelling characters we’ve seen in recent years. David Lagercrantz’s brilliant work in continuing this remarkable series honors Stieg Larsson’s masterpiece. We at Sony are so honored to be part of this series with Yellowbird, and we’re so excited to be making an original film of The Girl in the Spider’s Web. Fede Alvarez is the perfect choice to direct. Fede is an amazing director with a unique vision of the world. In particular, his talent and skill in creating psychological intensity will bring Lisbeth Salander back into popular movie culture with a roar.”

Alvarez co-wrote the script with Steven Knight (Eastern Promises, Peaky Blinders) and Jay Basu (Metal Gear Solid). I hope that whatever they do will turn out great. It's hard to think that it could be better than what Fincher did with the first movie, but we'll just have to wait and see. Here's the synopsis from the book that the film will be based on:

A genius hacker who has always been an outsider. A journalist with a penchant for danger. She is Lisbeth Salander, the girl with the dragon tattoo. He is Mikael Blomkvist, crusading editor of Millennium. One night, Blomkvist receives a call from a source who claims to have been given information vital to the United States by a young female hacker. Blomkvist, always on the lookout for a story, reaches out to Salander for help. She, as usual, has plans of her own. Together they are drawn into a ruthless underworld of spies, cybercriminals, and government operatives—some willing to kill to protect their secrets.

What do you think about Alvarez taking on the directing duties for the this movie?
