Ewan McGregor Reveals Original Much Darker Plans For OBI-WAN KENOBI - "He's Drinking Too Much"
Obi-Wan Kenobi star Ewan McGregor has offered a bit of insight into Lucasfilm’s original plans for the Jedi Knight, and things were much darker for him. Obi-Wan was originally going to be a lonely drunk working at a bar who would get beat up.
The series that we saw featured Obi-Wan living a miserable existence on Tatooine as he is looking over Luke Skywalker. He’s cut off from the force, and he’s dealing with PTSD after the events of Revenge of the Sith.
It could’ve been much worse for him, though. McGregor shared in an interview with Vanity Fair: "The first episode used to start with me as a waiter in a bar.”
He continued, “You know, like he's really lost his way, Obi-Wan. He's working in a bar, he's drinking too much, I get beaten up. People are kicking me, and I'm just like taking it, and then stalking out, you know, into the night."
The actor added: "I mean, that was our first ideas anyway. There was a draft where that's how it started."
McGregor went on to say: "We were talking about a movie at that point, not a TV series. Disney+ wasn’t there yet. I said, 'All I can see is him broken after some time after 'Episode III,' and he’s in a really dark place.'"
It would have been an interesting direction to take the character, but we pretty much got something similar, just not as dark. The series had some good concepts to play with but ultimately the overall story was a mess for the series.
Obi-Wan Kenobi should’ve been so much better than it ended up being. As of right now, there are no plans for a second season, but McGregor hopes that one day it will happen and that he’ll get to play the character again.
I just wish they would have made the trilogy of films that were originally planned!
