Ewan McGregor Will Play The Two Lead Characters in FARGO Season 3
The FX series Fargo sounded like a terrible idea from the start — why would anyone want to adapt the classic Coen Brothers movie into a TV show? There's no way that would be good...right? Surprisingly, doubters (myself included) were proven wrong with Noah Hawley's brilliant adaptation, which is influenced by tons of the Coens' work but feels enough like its own thing to stand on its own. The first season was my favorite thing on TV that year, and while I thought Hawley stumbled a little bit in the last couple episodes of season 2, it was still a terrific season of television.
I was already excited about the upcoming third season of the show, but now that excitement has doubled because Deadline has just revealed that Ewan McGregor will star as both Emmit and Ray Stussy, the season's two lead characters.
Emmit Stussy is the Parking Lot King of Minnesota. A handsome, self-made, real estate mogul and family man, Emmit sees himself as an American success story. His slightly younger brother, Ray Stussy, on the other hand is more of a cautionary tale. Balding, pot-bellied, Ray is the kind of guy who peaked in high school. Now a parole officer, Ray has a huge chip on his shoulder about the hand he’s been dealt, and he blames his brother, Emmit, for his misfortunes.
While season 2 was a prequel that took place in the 1970s, season 3 will take place in 2008, "a couple of years" after season 1 (which was set in 2006). McGregor is the first actor to join the new cast of the anthology series, so we'll have plenty more casting announcements before the new season kicks off in 2017.
