Ex-Marvel TV Head Gets Honest About DAREDEVIL: BORN AGAIN and Who Really Deserves the Credit

Jeph Loeb helped shape a huge era of superhero television as the head of Marvel Television. During his time, he oversaw six hit series that aired on Netflix that included Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, The Defenders, and The Punisher.

Now, with Daredevil: Born Again officially bringing Charlie Cox’s Matt Murdock back into the MCU, Loeb is opening up about what it means to see those characters return, and why the term “Netflix heroes” doesn’t quite sit right with him.

Loeb told Newsarama:

“I’m very happy for all my friends – actors, writers, directors, stunt folks, crew and everybody else who worked on all those shows and killed it – that they get to continue to honor those roles. I’m not sure if anything like that has happened before – particularly on two different networks.”

Characters and storylines that originated under Marvel Television on Netflix are now being revived and continued within Disney’s MCU, which is something that doesn’t happen often in Hollywood.

For Loeb, it’s a proud full-circle moment, but he’s also quick to make sure credit goes where it’s due.

“One thing that I’d love to clear up – while it’s an easy shorthand to call them the ‘Netflix’ heroes – the plain truth is Netflix was our network.

“They aired the shows that then Marvel Television created, produced, wrote, cast, shot, edited, scored, etc. – hours and hours of some of the most brilliant people who worked on those shows for Marvel TV.

“It was such an incredible team who have since gone out there and made names for themselves on nearly every other network/streaming service as executives/writers/producers – the works! Those folks are the real heroes of those six series!”

Loeb’s respect and appreciation for the team behind those shows is clear. While the “Netflix” label might be easy shorthand, he wants fans to remember that these series were born from Marvel Television’s creative DNA.

Even though Loeb has moved on from his Marvel TV days, he’s still busy in the world of comics. He’s currently writing a new X-Men title that celebrates the 30th anniversary of the classic Age of Apocalypse storyline, and it sounds like there’s plenty more to come from him in the Marvel universe.

When asked if he might ever return to the world of Daredevil or reunite the Defenders, Loeb kept it simple: “There are always more stories to tell.”
