Ezra Bridger’s Dangerous Escape From Thrawn Takes Center Stage in New STAR WARS Comic
One of the biggest “wait, how did that happen?” moments from Ahsoka Season 1 is finally getting answered, and it sounds like Dave Filoni has cooked up a pretty intense missing chapter for Ezra Bridger.
When Ezra made his long-awaited return to the main Star Wars galaxy, fans were obviously thrilled.
The show skipped over how exactly Ezra survived sneaking aboard Grand Admiral Thrawn’s ship and make it back home without getting caught, blasted, hexed, or outmaneuvered by one of the Empire’s smartest villains.
Now Lucasfilm and Marvel are teaming up to tell that story in a new five-issue comic miniseries tied directly to Ahsoka. The series is titled Star Wars: Ahsoka – Escape from Thrawn, and the first issue arrives on January 20, 2027.
The official synopsis reads, “Witness the unseen story of Ezra Bridger’s daring flight from Peridea! Ezra narrowly escaped his exile beyond the known galaxy by stowing away aboard Grand Admiral Thrawn’s flagship, but his fight to return home is far from over!
“Hunted across hyperspace with nowhere to hide, the rebel hero must now evade Captain Enoch, counter the dark magick of the Nightsisters, and outwit the Empire’s greatest strategist if he hopes to make it off the Chimaera alive.”
Ezra’s escape was one of the most interesting missing pieces from Ahsoka Season 1, because the show gave us the beginning and the end, but skipped the dangerous middle part.
The miniseries is written by Rodney Barnes and is based on a story by Filoni, who serves as Lucasfilm’s President and Chief Creative Officer. The five issues will feature art from Andrea Di Vito, with cover art by Phil Noto.
In Ahsoka Season 1, Ezra was still stranded on Peridea after the events of Star Wars Rebels. Back in that animated series, Ezra made one of the biggest moves of his life by using the purrgils to send Thrawn’s Star Destroyer, the Chimaera, into hyperspace.
That decision removed Thrawn from the board, but it also trapped Ezra far beyond the known galaxy.
Years later, Ahsoka Tano and Sabine Wren finally found him on Peridea, but their reunion came with one major problem: Thrawn was still there too, and he was ready to leave.
In the finale, Sabine helps Ezra board Thrawn’s departing ship, giving him a shot at finally getting back home.
The next time we see him, Ezra has reached the New Republic fleet and reunites with Hera Syndulla. It was an emotional moment, but it also left fans wondering what kind of nightmare Ezra had to survive between sneaking onto the Chimaera and stepping off safely on the other side.
That missing adventure is where Escape from Thrawn comes in.
The comic will put Ezra right in the middle of Thrawn’s ship with Captain Enoch, the Nightsisters, and Thrawn himself all standing between him and freedom.
That’s a brutal place to hide, especially when you’re trapped in hyperspace with nowhere to run. Ezra has always been scrappy, clever, and reckless in the best ways, so watching him try to survive this situation should make for a very fun ride.
This also gives Lucasfilm a chance to add more weight to Ezra’s return before he appears again in Ahsoka Season 2. Eman Esfandi will return as Ezra Bridger when the second season premieres on Disney+ on January 20, 2027.
For fans of Star Wars Rebels, Ahsoka, Thrawn, and all the weird Force-connected madness surrounding Peridea, this is a story worth keeping an eye on.
Ezra’s return was already a big deal, but now we’re finally going to see the part of the escape that the show left out, and it sounds like Thrawn isn’t going to make it easy for him.
