F1 Sequel Is Officially in the Works as Jerry Bruckheimer Confirms Sequel Plans

After tearing up the global box office and landing a surprise Oscar nomination, Brad Pitt’s F1 isn’t slowing down. In fact, it’s gearing up for another lap.

Producer Jerry Bruckheimer has confirmed that a sequel to the high-octane racing drama is officially moving forward at Apple TV, giving fans of the record-breaking sports film something big to look forward to.

When F1 hit theaters last June, it dominated. The film sped to the top of the worldwide box office and ultimately pulled in over $630 million globally, becoming the highest-grossing sports film of all time.

That alone would have been impressive, but it also stood as last year’s biggest original feature and delivered the biggest opening for an original live-action film in the U.S. in the last five years. It even marked the highest-grossing movie of Brad Pitt’s career.

Audiences clearly connected with it. The film earned an A CinemaScore and an incredible 97% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, along with an 82% critic score that secured it a “Certified Fresh” rating.

With numbers like that, a sequel felt inevitable. Still, nothing had been officially announced. That changed after the film scored an unexpected Oscar nomination for Best Picture, which seems to have pushed things into motion.

Speaking to the BBC, Bruckheimer confirmed the news fans were waiting for, saying, “We're working on a sequel.” He didn’t get into casting details or when production might kick off, but he did make it clear he will “of course” be involved.

Bruckheimer also opened up about the awards recognition and the long road it took to bring the first film to life. He admitted he was “surprised” and thrilled by the Oscar nod, explaining:

“It was a long journey to get the movie made because we had to endure a couple of strikes – but in the end, the movie entertained audiences around the world. I never worked with Brad Pitt before, and it's really a thrill to work with Brad.”

That journey clearly paid off. Beyond the film’s massive box office run and critical praise, there’s also a strategic angle to this sequel. Formula 1 coverage in the U.S. is shifting from ESPN to Apple TV this year, and the streamer is expected to make the sport one of its major attractions. Continuing the F1 story fits perfectly into that larger plan.

Seven-time Drivers’ Champion Lewis Hamilton also played a major role in bringing authenticity to the film. Through his Dawn Apollo Films banner, he served as a producer and consultant on the project, helping ensure the racing action felt real.

Hamilton recently shared his reaction to the film’s awards recognition, saying, “This is so incredibly surreal. It’s a tremendous honour to see the F1 movie nominated by the Academy, especially alongside such talented [artists] and storytellers.”

He continued, “When we were making this movie, we knew we had something special, real and authentic on our hands, and it’s amazing to see everyone’s hard work and dedication recognised. Major shout to everyone who worked on this, so, so deserved.”

With Apple TV doubling down on Formula 1 and Bruckheimer officially confirming that F1: The Movie 2 is in development, it feels like this franchise is just getting started. No casting details yet, no release window, but the engine is running.

Stay tuned. The next race is already on the horizon.
